Erinaceus europaeus (Hedgehog) to Phocoena phocoena (Porpoise)

[Previous] [Next]

Class Mammalia
Order Insectivora

Erinaceus europaeus (Hedgehog)
The first road-kill of the year was noted in Thetford on 21/3 with another in Stoke Holy Cross on 23/3. Another dead one was found in my BBS square TM0285 at Kenninghall, proving the presence of the species for the square. No live animals were seen until 6/5 when two around Amberley Wild Brooks in the middle of the night on the BUBO bird race. One was also noted at The Nunnery on 13/6 whilst moth-trapping. Whilst not necessarily an exhaustive list, this was probably most or all of the live sightings although most road-kills will have gone unrecorded.
Talpa europaea (Mole)
No actual moles were recorded but mole-hills were widely seen around the Brecks and elsewhere, and the presence of the species in my BBS square TM0285 at Kenninghall was confirmed likewise.
{Sorex araneus (Common Shrew)}
One dead one was found on the drive at home, presumably due to our cat, on 2/4.
{Shrew sp.}
High-pitched squeaking presumed to be due to shrews was commonly heard. A dead shrew on Barnhamcross Common on 27/1 was not specifically identified but probably Common.

Order Chiroptera

Nyctalus noctula (Noctule)
A large bat assumed to be this species was flying high before dusk at Marsham Heath on 29/7.
Pipistrellus pipistrellus (Common Pipistrelle)
This species, calling at 45 kHz, was confirmed at The Nunnery on 13/6 by use of a bat-detector.
{Pipistrelle sp.}
Small bats assumed to be one of the pipistrelle species were first noted at Whitlingham on 19/3 and were still on the wing at Caistor Fort on 21/10.
{Bat sp.}
Lots along a stream near Arundel on the BUBO birdrace may have been Daubenton's Bat on habitat but nothing could be seen of them really.

Order Rodentia

Sciurus carolinensis (Grey Squirrel)
Common, first noted on 1/1 in Holkham Park.
Rattus norvegicus (Brown Rat)
Recorded from Titchwell (two on 1/1 by feeders), Walberswick (one on 4/3), Hickling Stubb Mill (five on 10/3), Horsey (one on 25/11) and most frequently along Mangreen Lane when regularly seen along the roadside by the farmhouse.
Apodemus sylvaticus (Wood Mouse)
One ran across the road at Santon Downham on 25/3, one at Waltham Brooks on 6/5 and one at Linn of Dee on 1/9. Probably this species but Yellow-necked Mouse could not be ruled out on sight views.
Clethrionomys glareolus (Bank Vole)
A vole, probably of this species, noted in thick vegetation on the banks of the Little Ouse by The Nunnery on 25/2.

Order Lagomorpha

Oryctolagus cuniculus (Rabbit)
Common, although strangely not noted until 10/1.
Lepus capensis (Brown Hare)
First noted near Wolferton by the roadside on 1/1 and the only other noted record was from my BBS square TM0285 at Kenninghall on 12/5. Others will have been unrecorded but perhaps a general feeling of fewer around this year.
