The Gambia 1995

Andy Musgrove, 16 November - 1 December 1995

Summary | Daily Log | Systematic List | Daily Totals

Summary

An excellent two-week trip during which a total of 275 species were recorded; Andy had 179 ticks (first time in Africa) and John had 24 (had spent two weeks in The Gambia in 1993). The highlights were White-backed Night Heron, White-headed Vulture, Bateleur, Long-crested Eagle, Levaillant's Cuckoo, Yellowbill, Verreaux's Eagle Owl, Pearl-spotted Owlet, Carmine Bee-eater, Snowy-crowned Robin Chat, Yellow White-eye, Yellow-mantled Widowbird and Crimson-winged Pytilia.

The most obvious species which were not recorded were Tawny Eagle, African Green Pigeon, Grey-headed Kingfisher, Black Wood Hoopoe, Yellow-throated Leaflove, Leaflove, Yellow-breasted Apalis and Splendid Glossy Starling, as well as a few more specialised dips (such as Abyssinian Ground Hornbill). We didn't go any further upriver than Tendaba, to cut out on excessive travelling.

The weather was, as expected, very hot. We birded most days in the morning and late afternoon but spent the middle of the day around the pool. We stayed at the Palma Rima hotel, which is situated at the other end of the cycle track from the Kotu Bridge. The hotel was OK, but nothing special, and the evening disco and entertainments could be excrutiatingly loud, which can be a problem if you're wanting to get up at dawn (7 a.m.) We ate out almost every night, with plenty of restaurants and beach-bars to choose from. All of us had mild bouts of "Banjul Belly" on and off throughout the holiday, but never so badly that we couldn't go out. Whether this was due to the food, the water (we sterilised ours) or the heat was a regular (but unsolved) topic of discussion.

The locals were, as expected, a hassle at times but once we'd got used to them we found we could usually cope. However, they were at worst incredibly irritating and we never felt threatened. We took tourist taxis to most locations, usually sharing a small jeep with a couple of other groups of British birders. These weren't particularly cheap, but were reasonable enough. We arranged to go to Tendaba with a local guide known as "Baba" who John and Janette had met on their previous trip; he knows his birds fairly well. The only other guide who seemed to know what he was talking about was called "Lamin" (like half of the Gambian male population!) Most of the other so-called guides were obviously useless; just ask them a few questions and use your common sense.

Itinerary

16/11 Andy and Trudy landed at 1540 (with a Blue-bellied Roller seen whilst taxiing down the runway!) Got to the Palma Rima with about an hour of daylight and wandered around the grounds before dark.
17/11 Day spent in the Kotu area; walked from the Palma Rima along the beach to the Kotu stream, across the golf course, and back along the cycle track. In the afternoon, walked along the roads inland from the hotel and then returned along the cycle track. John and Janette arrived p.m.
18/11 Morning around the Kotu area. In the afternoon we walked south along the beach to Bijilo and walked along the outside of the perimeter fence.
19/11 All day at Abuko.
20/11 Morning at Tanji and afternoon around Kotu area.
21/11 21/11 Morning at Yundum (fields at the end of the runway).
22/11 Got the ferry from Banjul to Barra (which was late) and got taxi to Essau; wandered about for a few hours then returned to Barra and then back on the ferry.
23/11 Morning along the Bund Road for a few hours. Went to MRC grounds in the afternoon and walked back along Atlantic Road.
24/11 Morning at Tanji again and afternoon in Kotu area.
25/11 Reached Pirang about dawn, birded here then drove inland via a puncture stop and lots of raptor stops. Stayed at Brumein bridge for two hours whilst tyre fixed (though excellent birding). Continued to Tendaba. Quick walk here before dark.
26/11 Walked around peanut compound at dawn. Boat trip up Kisi Bolong during morning. Airfield in evening.
27/11 Airfield at dawn and again after breakfast. Drove back to coast; after two puncture stops we abandoned our van (and driver) and Baba somehow managed to flag down the Banjul-Basse express bus (which otherwise seems to stop for nothing). After about an hour we were dropped off near Pirang from where one of Baba's friends took us back to the hotel.
28/11 Kotu area in the morning, Bijilo in the afternoon.
29/11 All day at Abuko
30/11 Andy and Trudy had a quick walk around Kotu area and left in the afternoon. John went up to the top of the Kotu stream in the morning and Janette went shopping in Banjul. In the afternoon, John and Janette went to Brufut Woods.
1/12 Around Kotu areas and then John and Janette returned home.

[Black/Yellow-billed Kite (Milvus sp.)]

Due to the similarity between the two Milvus (sub)species, many Kites were not fully identified, especially at the beginning of the trip when the differences in flight silhouette weren't appreciated. Kites weren't particularly common though, compared to southern Europe for example, and probably no more than c10 were seen in any one day.

African Fish Eagle (Haliaeetus vocifer)

2 were seen well in flight and later perched at Brumein bridge on 25/11. At Tendaba, 1 was heard on 26/11 and 27/11, and also 1 seen fishing out over the river Gambia from Tendaba camp on 27/11.

Hooded Vulture (Necrosyrtes monachus)

By far the commonest raptor in the Gambia. Hooded Vultures were seen before leaving the plane at Yundum on arrival, and then seen every day of the trip. The highest day total was estimated at c300 on 25/11, but no real counts were made. Birds were not as numerous on the coast, but still common. Particularly good views could be obtained at the hyena enclosure at Abuko.

White-backed Vulture (Gyps africanus)

White-headed Vulture (Aegypius occipitalis)

1 immature flew over Brumein Bridge on 25/11. This is a rather scarce species in the Gambia. It is quite a small vulture, with a distinctive pale belly patch.

Palm-nut Vulture (Gypohierax angolensis)

These were one of the more regularly recorded raptors, and were noted at Palma Rima hotel, Bijilo, Abuko, Kotu stream and Kotu ponds, Tanji (pair with juvenile), Pirang, along the road going upcountry, Brumein bridge and Tendaba.

Short-toed Eagle (Circaetus gallicus)

1 was seen over Kisi Bolong on 26/11. 2 birds claimed to be this species by Baba by the road on 25/11 looked unusual; although they had the right jizz for this species, they also had very dark underwing coverts; a similar bird was seen by the road on 27/11 also. Beaudouin's Snake Eagle was thought to be a possibility, but the books were not helpful in this respect. Otherwise, Martial Eagle fitted on plumage features, but the obvious Snake Eagle jizz seemed wrong.

Brown Snake Eagle (C. cinereus)

1 seen over the road on 25/11, at Km 97. 2 were over Kisi Bolong on 26/11. 1 was seen high over the road near Brumein bridge on 27/11.

1 was seen over the road on 25/11, carrying a snake, at Km 92.

Bateleur (Terathopius ecaudatus)

An adult male was seen over Brumein Bridge on 25/11; probably the best bird of the trip!

Marsh Harrier (Circus aeruginosus)

1 at Tanji on 24/11. 1 by the road and 1 at Pirang on 25/11. 1 at Tendaba camp on 26/11 and another at Tendaba airfield on 26/11 & 27/11. 1 at Yundum airport on 30/11.

Montagu's Harrier (Circus pygargus)

A ringtail was over Kisi Bolong on 26/11. Also, a distant ringtail over Tendaba airfield on 27/11 could have been Montagu's or Pallid.

Dark Chanting Goshawk (Melierax metabates)

A pair were seen by the roadside at Km 77 on 25/11. 1 was at Brumein bridge and another was seen during a puncture stop about 10 miles west of there on 27/11. A pair, perhaps 3, were seen well at the Abuko extension on 29/11.

Shikra (A. badius)

The commonest small hawk, noted in small numbers around the Kotu area, Essau, Pirang, Tendaba and Bijilo, as well as by the roadside upcountry.

[West African Little Sparrowhawk (A. erythropus)]

A small hawk with a white rump seen briefly in the thick forest at Abuko on 19/11 was almost certainly this species, but views were too brief to rule out Gabar Goshawk with 100% certainty.

Wahlberg's Eagle (Hieraaetus/Aquila wahlbergi)

1 at Essau on 22/11 and 1 seen at Tendaba airfield on 26/11 & 27/11. This small eagle can actually be mistaken for a Black Kite quite easily if the tail shape isn't seen well.

African Hawk Eagle (H. spilogaster)

3 were seen over the road, about 10 miles west of Brumein Bridge, on 27/11.

Long-crested Eagle (Spizaetus occipitalis)

Red-necked Falcon (F. chicquera)

Singles were seen over the Palma Rima on 19/11 and at Yundum on 21/11, and 2 were at Pirang on 25/11. All were only flight views, and a little disappointing, but the rufous throat of this race made identification fairly straightforward.

African Hobby (F. cuvieri)

Singles at Tanji on 20/11 & Yundum on 21/11. A pair were at Tendaba on 25/11 and singles seen twice (same bird?) around Tendaba on 26/11.
