Present at Kosi Tappu with approximately 30 seen on 20/2.

Great Crested Grebe Podiceps cristatus

Up to 12 seen at Kosi Tappu on 20/2, mostly near the Barrage.

Cormorant Phalacrocorax carbo

Common at both Chitwan and Kosi Tappu, with peaks of 60 on 18/2 at the former site and 60 on 19/2 at the latter.

Little Cormorant Phalacrocorax niger

Common at Kosi Tappu, with up to 40 on 20/2.

Asian Darter Anhinga rufa

Single on Rapti river at Chitwan on 18/2, up to eight at Kosi Tappu on 20/2.

One was seen twice in flight near Kosi Barrage on 20/2.

Very common at Kosi Tappu, max of 80 on 19/2.

Common everywhere, peak count of 50 at Kosi Tappu on 19/2.

Woolly-necked Stork Ciconia episcopus

A flock of 20 perched beside Rapti river, Chitwan, were seen at long range on 17/2. Also two were seen in a roadside field between Chitwan and Kosi Tappu on 18/2.

Relatively common: seen daily between 16/2 and 20/2, with a max of four at Kosi Tappu on the latter date.

Max of 10 seen between Kathmandu and Chitwan on 16/2, and six between Chitwan and Kosi Tappu on 18/2. Just one seen at Kosi Tappu, on 20/2.

White-tailed Eagle Haliaeetus albicilla

At least two (two seen in flight over Kosi river, then probably the same two later perched on a mud bank) at Kosi Tappu on 19/2.

Oriental White-backed Vulture Gyps bengalensis

Approx 20 seen between Chitwan and Kosi Tappu on 18/2 (mostly around a roadside carcass), plus singles at Kosi Tappu on 19/2 and 20/2.

Two seen at Kosi Tappu on 19/2. Initially perched in a tree with Eurasian Griffons, then one seen later in flight.

A single flew over the Trisuli river between Kathmandu and Chitwan on 16/2.

One at Kosi Tappu on 19/2, with three (two adults and an immature) there the following day.

One ringtail over Chitwan Jungle Lodge on 17/2 and one male between Chitwan and Kosi Tappu on 18/2. Single male and ringtail seen at Kosi Tappu between 18/2 and 20/2.

Pied Harrier Circus melanoleucus

One adult male seen between Chitwan and Kosi Tappu on 18/2, then a single male seen at Kosi Tappu on 19/2 and three (all males) there on 20/2.

Northern Sparrowhawk Accipiter nisus

Single at Chitwan on 17/2.

Shikra Accipiter badius

Singles at Phulchowki on 15/2, and Kosi Tappu on 19/2 and 20/2. The latter bird was a juvenile roosting overnight at Kosi Tappu Camp, initially identifed as a Besra Sparrowhawk.

One on 19/2 at Kosi Tappu.

A single bird was present with Redshanks and Greenshanks on the banks of the Rapti river at Chitwan on 17/2.

Six on the Rapti river at Chitwan on 17/2, and a single at Kosi Tappu on 20/2.

Greenshank Tringa nebularia

Common: at least 150 were seen along the Rapti river at Chitwan, and up to 50 were seen at Kosi Tappu on both 19/2 and 20/2.

Green Sandpiper Tringa ochropus

Seen regularly in small numbers: max of six at Chitwan (17/2) and five at Kosi Tappu (19/2).

Single birds at Chitwan on 16/2 and Kosi Tappu on 20/2.

Great Black-headed Gull Larus ichthyaetus

Three singles seen at the Kosi river and Kosi Barrage on 20/2.

Yellow-legged Gull/Herring Gull Larus cachinnans/argentatus

Four adult gulls were seen perched on the exposed mud of the Kosi river on 19/2.

The heat haze made viewing difficult, but they were large, white-headed gulls with a relatively pale grey mantle.

Caspian Tern Sterna caspia

One seen at Kosi Barrage on 20/2.

River Tern Sterna aurantia

About 12 over the Kosi river on 20/2.

Black-bellied Tern Sterna acuticauda

Four seen at Kosi Tappu on 19/2.

Feral birds were very common in Kathmandu.

Three at Phulchowki on 15/2 with three more at the Godawari Botanical Garden later the same day.

Small numbers common at Chitwan and Kosi Tappu, max 10 at Kosi Tappu on 19/2.

Two at Chitwan on 17/2.

Alexandrine Parakeet Psittacula eupatria

Up to four at Chitwan (17/2) and two at Kosi Tappu (19/2).

Ring-necked Parakeet Psittacula krameri

Common in small numbers in Kathmandu, Chitwan and Kosi Tappu, the maximum count recorded being eight at the later site on 21/2.

Blossom-headed Parakeet Psittacula cyanocephala

Five seen on journey between Chitwan and Kosi Tappu on 18/2 and three at Kosi Tappu on 21/2.

Moustached (Red-breasted) Parakeet Psittacula alexandri

Common on Chitwan, with several small flocks passing over, especially towards dusk. Approx 100 recorded on both 16/2 and 17/2. Also two at Kosi Tappu on 21/2.

Slaty-headed Parakeet Psittacula himalayana

A single bird seen at Chitwan on 17/2.

Common Hawk Cuckoo (Brainfever Bird) Hierococcyx varius

Four seen or heard at Chitwan on 17/2 and one at Kosi Tappu on 20/2.

Greater Coucal Centropus sinensis

One at Chitwan on 16/2, then several at Kosi Tappu with a max of about 15 on 20/2.

Brown Fish Owl Ketupa zeylonensis

One seen roosting in a tree at Kosi Tappu towards dusk on 20/2. Also one was seen by others, and briefly glimpsed in flight by me, at Chitwan on 17/2.

Jungle Owlet Glaucidium radiatum

Two at Chitwan on 17/2 included one seen very clearly through the window of my room in daylight as it roosted in a tree outside. One also seen at Kosi Tappu on 19/2.

Asian Barred Owlet Glaucidium cuculoides

Two were seen at Godawari Botanical Garden in the afternoon of 15/2, and one at Chitwan was seen or heard daily between 16/2 and 18/2.

Brown Hawk Owl Ninox scutulata

One was present at Chitwan, and calling incessantly through every night! Luckily I slept soundly, and only heard it on 16/2 and 18/2. One at Kosi Tappu didn’t manage to wake me!

Spotted Little Owl Athene branma

One seen perched on wires on the outskirts of Kathmandu on 15/2. Also seen at Kosi Tappu, with two there on 19/2.

Two were also seen by other group members from the roof of the Greenwich Village hotel in Kathmandu.

Pacific Swift Apus pacificus

A single at Kosi Tappu on 19/2.

Alpine Swift Apus melba

A flock of about 80 was seen at a roadside cliff between Chitwan and Kosi Tappu on 18/2.

Little (House) Swift Apus affinis

Common in a few places along the roadside: 30 between Kathmandu and Chitwan on 16/2 and 100 between Chitwan and Kosi Tappu on 18/2.

Crested Tree Swift Hemiprocne coronata

Several seen at Chitwan, with a max of 30 on 16/2.

White-breasted Kingfisher Halcyon smyrnensis

Common in small numbers, the largest recorded being five at Kosi Tappu on both 19/2 and 20/2.

Stork-billed Kingfisher Pelargopsis capensis

Single at Chitwan on 17/2 and up to four (19/2) at Kosi Tappu.

Common Kingfisher Alcedo atthis

One seen between Kathmandu and Chitwan on 16/2, up to three at Chitwan (17/2) and up to five at Kosi Tappu (19/2).

Pied Kingfisher Ceryle rudis

Seen between Kathmandu and Chitwan, at Chitwan, between Chitwan and Kosi Tappu, and at Kosi Tappu where the max count was recorded (ten on 19/2).

Little Green Bee-eater Merops orientalis

Small flocks seen at Chitwan (max of 20 on 18/2), a total of about 20 between Chitwan and Kosi Tappu on 18/2 and about 10 at Kosi Tappu on 20/2.

Indian Roller Coracias benghalensis

Several between Kathmandu and Chitwan on 16/2, at least 50 between Chitwan and Kosi Tappu on 18/2 and two at Kosi Tappu on 20/2.

Four at Chitwan on 17/2, and max of five at Kosi Tappu on 20/2.-

Great Indian Hornbill Buceros bicornis

Two were seen superbly in flight on 17/2 at Chitwan.

Oriental Pied Hornbill Anthracoceros albirostris

A single seen briefly at Chitwan on 16/2 was followed by good views, particularly in flight, of two there the following day.

Lineated Barbet Megalaima lineata

Four at Chitwan on 17/2 with a single the following day between Chitwan and Kosi Tappu.

Blue-throated Barbet Megalaima asiatica

One seen briefly at Chitwan on 17/2, and excellent views of one at Kosi Tappu on 19/2.

Four at Kosi Tappu on 21/2 was the only sighting.
