Rules
- Predict 15 species from the list of rarities below, which
you think will occur during 1999.
- You only have a maximum of £350
to spend.
- Every time one of your chosen species is sighted
in Britain in 1999 then you will get one
point. So, for example, 4 Pied Wheatears
in the year would give you 4 points.
- The person with the most points
at the end of the year is the winner.
- It will include all birds seen in the United
Kingdom, Republic of Ireland, Isle of Man and the
Channel Islands.
- The list of species seen will be taken each month
from Birding World. Only
definite sightings will be counted - no probables
or possibles, 'Reported' sightings may have to be
pended until a BBRC decision is announced.
- In the event of a tie at the end of the year, the
person who has predicted the most species
(rather than individuals) will be declared the
winner.
- In the event of a further tie, the person who
predicted the rarest species
will be the winner.
- Only individuals which arrived
during 1999 will be allowed. For Wilson's Petrel,
only sightings from land will be eligible for
points (i.e. birds seen from pelagics do not
count).
- Only one list per person is
allowed - but friends or family can take part.
- To keep the element of surprise,
the following individuals will not be
included if they are still present or
return to their traditional sites:
- Pied-billed Grebes in London and
Rostellen, Co. Cork
- Black Ducks on Tresco and Barrow, Co.
Kerry
- Lesser Scaup at Lough Neagh
- Canvasback in Welney area
- Semipalmated Plover on Exe
- Collared Pratincole in Norfolk
- Laughing Gull at Boddam, Shetland
- Lesser Crested Tern on Farnes
- Spanish Sparrow in Cumbria
- Short-toed Treecreeper in Channel
Islands.
- To take part, phone MPL before 31
December 1998, pass your list to another
BUBO member, or fill out the entry
form below. Late entries will be allowed, but
will only start scoring points from the month
following the date the entry is received.
- The decision of the referee (MPL) is final!
