This is a report on a short birding
and sightseeing trip to Gujarat in western India. The plan was
to visit the Wild Ass Sanctuary in the Little Rann of Kutch, the
Gir Lion Sanctuary at Sasan Gir and Velavadar National Park. I
was the only birder, joined for some of the trip by my wife Nisha
and our friend Reshma. The birding was very enjoyable, although
the mammal watching was even more impressive: I managed to see
one new species of bird but had four large mammal lifers! A photo
gallery is also available.
I arranged a car and the accommodation
through Mohit Aggarwal of Asian Adventures.

Little Rann of Kutch
For the Little Rann of Kutch I stayed at Camp Zainabad, where
I was made very welcome by Dhanraj and Shabbir Malik. I went in
to the Little Rann of Kutch on a few occasions and also birded
a couple of areas just outside. A regular sight was thousands
of Greater Short-toed Larks flying over, with just a few Bimaculated.
Rufous-tailed Larks and Ashy-crowned Sparrow Larks were seen frequently,
but none of the scarcer lark species. Desert Wheatears were common
in the Rann, as were Variable on the outskirts, and a couple of
Isabelline completed the trio. Each trip into the Rann itself
produced the great sight of MacQueen's Bustard, with small groups
totalling 15 different birds altogether. Several hundred Common
Cranes and both Greater and Lesser Flamingos with numbers in the
hundreds were a common sight. Two Western Reef Egrets were seen
and up to 800 Great White and 7 Dalmatian Pelicans. Two Black
Storks seen one evening had been replaced by six White Storks
the following morning.
Raptors were not numerous but a good variety was seen including
both Pallid and Montagu's Harriers, a Eurasian Sparrowhawk, White-eyed
Buzzard, Long-legged Buzzard, Greater Spotted Eagle and a very
pale, almost whitish, Tawny Eagle. Four species of shrikes were
seen, with Rufous-tailed by far the commonest. Most, if not all,
appeared to be arenarius.
At the creek outside the Rann were 23 Greylag Geese and about
3500 ducks, comprising Shoveler, Wigeon, Gadwall, Pintail, Teal,
Pochard and Garganey in decreasing order of abundance. Up to 350
Chestnut-bellied Sandgrouse were seen here one morning. Several
Gull-billed Terns were seen, and two Caspian Terns were good to
see. Several species of waders were seen including Great Thick-knee,
Lesser Sand Plover and Yellow-wattled Lapwing although I missed
the Sociable Lapwing seen by Dhanraj just before I arrived. Four
Cream-coloured Coursers together though more than made up for
that.
Hirundines were quite confusing. Amongst small numbers of Plain
Martins I looked carefully for any Pale Martins. I noticed quite
a few birds with breastbands but these were all well-defined and
seemed to all be Sand Martins, a species which I would imagine
to be much less regular than Pale Martin. I was pleased to see
my first Stoliczka's Bushchat, a female or immature male that
gave a great show including the famous "puff and roll"
display as described before by Bill. Finally warblers were not
numerous but did include both Booted and Sykes's, plus Blyth's
Reed and at least four Moustached Warblers, the latter probably
the first record for the Little Rann of Kutch.
Aside from birds the Wild Asses were seen commonly and are truly
an attractive animal. We also saw both Red (Desert) Fox and Indian
Fox and I informed Dhanraj that I had seen a Jackal only to be
told that there haven't been any Jackals in the area for years
and hence it must have been a Wolf. Oops!
Gondal
At Gondal we stayed at the Orchard Palace hotel, and visited
the Naulakya Palace for sightseeing. There is good birding available
at a lake and some grasslands (veedis) on the outskirts of Gondal
although I did not have time to visit.
Sasan Gir
At Gir we had the privilege of being the first guests at Mohit's new Gir Birding Lodge. However I'm not quite sure whether privileged or guinea-pig is a better description, since it wasn't quite ready to receive guests! Anyway, it was very comfortable and being located right on the park boundary it is a great place to stay for anyone visiting Gir. Whilst no special birds were seen (Painted Sandgrouse,
Short-toed Snake Eagle and Tickell's Blue Flycatcher the best)
I was very happy with the one Asiatic Lion we saw at a recent
kill of a cow. The lioness stayed with the kill for the whole
day, so we saw her on morning and afternoon safaris.
Palitana
On Shatranjaya Hill, leading up to the Jain temples at the top,
I saw seven Grey-necked Buntings and a Eurasian Hobby.
Velavadar
One last day's birding at Velavadar National Park was very enjoyable,
once I had negotiated the tricky and potentially very expensive
business of permits. I managed, with my few broken words of Hindi,
to convince the guards to allow me in at Indian rates due to being
an Indian resident. Some places waving my resident's permit works,
at others it makes no difference! Without this the total foreigner
entrance fees (for permit, car, compulsory guide (who spent the
entire time sat in the back of the car reading a newspaper) and
camera) would have been at least $25 for the day. The absolutely
extortionate charge for a camcorder is $200 a day!!!
An amazing birding experience here is the harrier roost in the
evening. Between 5 and 6pm many hundreds of Montagu's and Pallid
Harriers come to roost in the grasslands. I conservatively estimated
1000 harriers in total, and this included 500 in the air at one
time! Needless to say the views are incredibly. Montagu's were
the commonest species but Pallid also numerous. A few Marsh joined
the roost and I saw a single ringtail Hen Harrier. Other raptors
seen during the day included four Greater Spotted Eagles (one
fulvescens bird), a juvenile Imperial Eagle, Bonelli's Eagle,
Short-toed Snake Eagle and Long-legged Buzzard.
Four White Storks and about 300 Great White Pelicans were seen,
along with a single Dalmation. A surprise find was an Indian Bustard
which gave excellent views as it walked through the grasslands.
This was one of two that have apparently arrived recently, although
my guide had earlier claimed that they do not occur when I asked
him about the species!
Velavadar was an excellent day's birding, but mammals were also
very good. As well as the hundreds of Blackbuck I had just seen
three Wolves chasing two Wild Boars and then was treated to a
bonus sighting of a Striped Hyena walking along the water's edge!
