A good selection, the highlight being Scarce Chaser. A welcome increase in Emperor Dragonfly records also.

Calopteryx virgo (Beautiful Demoiselle)
Singles were recorded at Ambersham Common on 6/5 and Washbattle Bridge on 25/5, but none in East Anglia.
Calopteryx splendens (Banded Demoiselle)
The first of the year was on Barnhamcross Common on 15/5 and the last at the Nunnery Lakes on 7/8, with further records from Trowse Meadows and Caistor Fort, as well as common along the Little Ouse by The Nunnery but mostly unrecorded.
Lestes sponsa (Emerald Damselfly)
Noted at Frost's Common on 12/7 (identified on clasper shape - no Scarce Emerald seen) and one at Winterton on 5/8.
Pyrrohosoma nymphula (Large Red Damselfly)
The first of the year were noted at Whitlingham on 1/5. A newly emerged one was by the garden pond on 13/5 proving breeding in the garden. Also recorded from Barnhamcross Common and Pilning but many must have gone unrecorded.
Coenagrion puella (Azure Damselfly)
The first of the year were at Surlingham Church Marsh on 13/5 with further records from Nunnery Lakes and Castle Marshes but mostly unrecorded.
Coenagrion pulchellum (Variable Damselfly)
Identified at Upton Fen on 22/6 and Castle Marshes on 24/6, on outward appearance only but both are recognised sites for the species.
Enallagma cyathigerum (Common Blue Damselfly)
The first were on Barnhamcross Common on 8/5 and then no more written down, although common and widespread.
Ishnura elegans (Blue-tailed Damselfly)
The first of the year were on Barnhamcross Common on 16/5 with further records from Rockland, Hickling, Castle Marshes, Bramerton and Nunnery Lakes but probably more widespread and unrecorded.
Erythromma najas (Red-eyed Damselfly)
Most records from the Nunnery Lakes where noted on at least seven dates between 16/5 and 4/9, including a record along the river bordering the SE corner of Barnhamcross Common. The only other locality was Woodbastwick Fen on 28/8.
Brachytron pratense (Hairy Dragonfly)
The only record was from Surlingham Church Marsh on 13/5.
Aeshna juncea (Common Hawker)
The only record was from Haweswater on 3/9.
Aeshna mixta (Migrant Hawker)
The first of the year were noted at Thetford Warren on 4/8 then widespread until 1/10 at Hickling but strangely no later records. Other recorded localities were Whitlingham, Swardeston, Barnhamcross Common, Rockland, Stoke Holy Cross (garden), Nunnery Lakes and Horsey.
Aeshna cyanea (Southern Hawker)
The first of the year was on Barnhamcross Common on 20/6 and the last recorded at Hickling on 1/10, with other localities including Thetford town centre and the garden in Stoke Holy Cross.
Aeshna grandis (Brown Hawker)
The first of the year was at The Nunnery on 19/7 with other localities being Barnhamcross Common, Horsey-Winterton, Rockland, Nunnery Lakes (last of the year on 4/9), Horsford Woods and Whitlingham.
Aeshna isosceles (Norfolk Hawker)
This local speciality was recorded at Rockland Broad on 11/6, Upton Fen and Hickling Broad on 22/6 and Castle Marshes on 24/6, all singles except two on the last date.
Anax imperator (Emperor Dragonfly)
An improvement over recent years. First noted on Barnhamcross Common on 8/6 and again on 26/6 with further records from West Harling Woods on 15/6, Thetford Green Lane (Tesco's) on 19/7 and Winterton on 5/8.
Libellula quadrimaculata (Four-spotted Chaser)
Noted at Rockland on 4/6 and Hickling on 22/6, but probably elsewhere also.
Libellula fulva (Scarce Chaser)
At least four (two males and two females) were seen at Castle Marshes on 24/6, my second ever record of this species.
Libellula depressa (Broad-bodied Chaser)
Females were seen at Pulborough Brooks on 6/5 and by the Thet in Thetford on 8/6.
Orthetrum cancellatum (Black-tailed Skimmer)
The first of the year was at Hickling on 29/5 and also noted from Rockland, Barnhamcross Common, Castle Marshes and Bramerton (last record on 2/7).
Sympetrum striolatum (Common Darter)
The first was a female or teneral male at Nunnery Lakes on 11/7 but widespread from August with the last being a late one at Horsey Dunes on 4/11.
Sympetrum sanguineum (Ruddy Darter)
Recorded from Frost's Common on 12/7 and 10/8 and from the Nunnery Lakes on 24/8.

Forficula auricularia (Common Earwig)
First noted in the house on 29/2.
Labia minor (Lesser Earwig)
Tentatively identified in the garden on 22/6.

Order Phasmida

{Carausius morosus (Laboratory Stick Insect)}
One found in the privet hedge by The Nunnery by Chris Gregory on 17/5.

Order Orthoptera

Further records of Roesel's Bush-cricket were welcome, along with a heard-only record attributed to Field-cricket.

Meconema thalassinum (Oak Bush-cricket)
A nymph was found in the garden on 25/6 with no more then until one here on 20/8 and one in the moth trap on 7/9. Singles were noted at The Nunnery on 6/9 and a late one on 3/11.
Pholidoptera griseoaptera (Dark Bush-cricket)
A nymph was found in the garden moth-trap on 16/6 but the first adults were heard in Stoke Holy Cross on 3/8, although one was seen on Barnhamcross Common on 2/8. Noted as common at Rockland Broad on 19/8. The last record of the year in Stoke Holy Cross was on 21/10.
Metrioptera roeselii (Roesel's Bush-cricket)
One was heard on the dry grassland at the Nunnery Lakes by lake E on 21/8 and was also seen. At least two were heard here on 4/9, one of which was netted and studied in detail.
Leptophyes punctatissima (Speckled Bush-cricket)
The only record was an immature in the garden on 10/6 during the day.
Gryllus campestris (Field-cricket)
A chorus of crickets was heard at dusk on 6/5 at the end of the BUBO bird race. Although the song was not identified at the time, later enquiries suggested that this species was by far the most likely, with a re-introduction program taking place in the area.
Stenobothrus lineatus (Stripe-winged Grasshopper)
Noted on Barnhamcross Common from 20/7 and also from Thetford Warren. No records after 22/8.
Omocestus viridulus (Common Green Grasshopper)
The first of the year was heard at Barnhamcross Common on 12/6 with the last recorded here on 22/8. Additional localities were Hickling Broad and Thetford Warren.
Chorthippus brunneus (Field Grasshopper)
Recorded on Barnhamcross Common between 20/7 and 22/8, with further records from the Nunnery Lakes, Thetford Warren and Lindisfarne.
Chorthippus parallelus (Meadow Grasshopper)
Recorded at Barnhamcross Common between 3/7 and 22/8, with the only other recorded locality being Surlingham Church Marsh.
Chorthippus albomarginatus (Lesser Marsh Grasshopper)
Only recorded from Barnhamcross Common, between 17/7 and 22/8.
Myrmeleotettix maculatus (Mottled Grasshopper)
Records from Barnhamcross Common on 20/7, Lindisfarne on 26/7 and Thetford Warren on 16/8.

Order Hemiptera

An interesting group but many identified tentatively only, due to the lack of a suitable guide. Some were keyed to family with a microscope.

First noted at The Nunnery on 13/6.
Sehirus bicolor (Pied Shield Bug)
One flew into the house on 12/3 and another noted from Surlingham Church Marsh on 12/8.
Eysarcoris fabricii
Tentatively identified from Rockland Broad on 29/5.
Palomena prasina (Common Green Shield Bug)
Identified from the garden moth trap on 5/9.
Pentatoma rufipes (Forest Bug)
Noted at Strumpshaw Fen on 14/8 and Barnhamcross Common on 17/8, the later eating a Cinnabar larva!
Lygocoris pabulinus (Common Green Capsid)
This or a similar Mirid bug noted in the garden moth trap on 22/8.
Gerridae sp. (Pond-skater sp.)
Noted at Ashwellthorpe Wood on 21/4.
Notonecta glauca (Common Backswimmer)
Recorded from the main pond at Mousehold Heath on 2/4.
Aphrophoridae sp. (Froghopper sp.)
"Cuckoo-spit" noted at Surlingham Church Marsh on 13/5. A beautiful tiny bug trapped at light at Strumpshaw Fen on 14/8 was also probably one of this family.
Cercopsis vulnerata
A red and black bug on nettles at Whitlingham on 28/5.
Arboridia sp.
Lots of small bugs in Ivy along the edge of the Little Ouse by The Nunnery, rather like A. ribauti in Chinery.
Cicadellidae sp. (Leafhopper sp.)
A brownish species of this family recorded from Surlingham Church Marsh on 26/8.
Eriosoma lanigerum (Woolly Aphid)
Noted at Thetford Warren on 9/6.
Macrosiphum rosae (Rose Aphid)
Noted in the garden on 11/6.
Aphis fabae (Black Bean Aphid)
This or a similar aphid on Black Knapweed at the Nunnery Lakes on 11/7.
Psyllidae sp. (Psyllid sp.)
One of these identified from Surlingham Church Marsh on 26/8.
Aleyrodidae sp. (Whitefly sp.)
Noted in the garden on 13/5.

Infesting our Weeping Fig indoors.

Small lacewing found in the kitchen at home on 8/8 and keyed.

Trapped in the garden on 11/9 and keyed.
Chrysoperla carnea
First identified correctly by wing-venation on 3/8 in the garden, and again on 27/10 (when browner). Probably this species also hibernating in the Nunnery Lakes hide on 8/2.
Sialis lutarea (Alder Fly)
First noted at the Nunnery Lakes on 6/4 and also at Caistor Fort on 23/4 and Whitlingham on 1/5.

Panorpa sp. (Scorpion-fly sp.)
Recorded at least at Barnhamcross Common on 8/5 and Whitlingham Woods on 19/8, but none keyed to species.

Siphonaptera sp. (Flea sp.)
Recorded in the house on 25/8, probably Ctenocephalis felis (Cat Flea).

Order Coleoptera

A small start made on a very large group. Some may have been named incorrectly due to the problems in obtaining easy-to-use literature.

Cicindela campestris (Green Tiger Beetle)
One was noted at the Nunnery Lakes on 21/3.
Carabus sp. (Ground Beetle sp.)
One was identified as C.violaceus at Horsey Dunes on 23/9 by others present, but later information provided by Martin Collier suggests that it could be one of a number of other species and so best left as Carabus sp.
Leistus spinibarbis
A blue beetle, ca 8mm long, was found in the house on 20/2 and initially named as Leistus sp., but was almost certainly this species, according to Martin Collier.
Pterostichus sp.
A beetle trapped at Hinderclay on 15/7 looked like P. nigrita in Chinery but could have been a number of other species.
Colymbetes fuscus
A water beetle, trapped in the garden on 2/6 and 18/8, identified by Chinery only.
Ilybus fuliginosus
A water beetle trapped at Mannington Hall on 3/6 (identified by others).
Nicrophorus humator (Sexton Beetle)
Recorded in the moth trap in the garden on 12 dates between 9/3 and 12/5, with a peak on three on 29/4 - others possibly went unrecorded.
Nicrophorus vestigator
One looking closest to this species from Chinery was trapped in the garden on 27/6.
Nicrophorus vespilloides
One, with black antennae, was found at Two Mile Bottom on 21/7.
Oiceoptoma thoracicum
A distinctive beetle with an orange thorax noted at Two Mile Bottom on 21/7.
Staphylinus olens (Devil's Coach-horse)
A large rove beetle assumed to be this species was found under the moth-trap on 31/8.
Staphylinidae sp. non Staphylinus olens (Small Rove Beetle sp.)
A small species, apparently not a Devil's Coach-horse, was at The Nunnery on 31/8.
Lampyris noctiluca (Glow-worm)
One was present at a moth-trap at Knettishall Heath on 8/7.

Identified at Rockland Broad on 29/5.
Rhagonycha fulva (Bloodsucker Beetle)
Noted at Whitlingham on 15/7 and at Nunnery Lakes on 7/8, although probably mostly unrecorded.

A beetle which looked like this species was found in the house on 22/3.

Trapped in the garden on 12/7 and 17/7.
Melolontha melolontha (Cockchafer)
Up to four per night were trapped in the garden between 8/5 and 2/6 (six dates), with further records from Handley Farm on 22/5 and The Nunnery on 13/6.
Phyllopertha horticola (Garden Chafer)
A huge emergence on Barnhamcross Common on 31/5.
Serica brunnea
Tentatively identified at Whitlingham Woods on 1/7 and The Nunnery on 13/7, both times coming to a moth-trap.
Aphodius sp.
Identified in the garden moth-trap on 22/8.
Dorcus parallelipipedus (Lesser Stag Beetle)
Singles were trapped in the garden at MV light on 19/6 and 13/8.
Clytus arietus (Wasp Beetle)
This striking species was noted in the garden moth-trap on 13/5 and at Two Mile Bottom on 6/6.

Recorded at Bramerton on 2/7.
Strangalia melanura
Identified on Barnhamcross Common on 17/7.

This excellent beastie was found at Kit Hurst Hill, nr Arundel, on 18/3.

One, apparently of this genus, was found in a hide at Pulborough Brooks on 6/5.

A shiny red and green beetle at the Nunnery Lakes on 21/8.

A "pea weevil" found in the garden on 26/2.

A weevil identified from The Nunnery on 9/5.

One in the office at The Nunnery on 16/5 and one on the Water Figwort in the garden on 20/8.

A weevil on Wain's Hill on 20/5.

Order Diptera

A large group, with many seen but identification not even attempted. An encouraging start was made on the hoverflies, although use of a microscope was pretty essential.

Tipula sp.
Flies thought to possibly be T. oleracea were noted in the garden trap on at least 21/4 and 1/5.
Nephrotoma appendiculata (Spotted Crane-fly)
Noted at Rockland Broad on 29/5.
Culiseta sp.
A mosquito in the house on 12/3, the genus determined from Chinery by wing-venation although not 100% sure.
Chironomididae sp. (Chironomid sp.)
First noted at Martin Mere on 25/3 - probably commonly noted.
Sylvicola fenestralis
A "window midge" in the back room on 20/2, possibly a different species?
Hartigiola annulipes
Galls of this species were abundant on beech leaves at Rishbeth Wood in the autumn and identified retrospectively.

Eristalis tenax
First hoverfly of the year, identified in the garden on 11/3 and 2/4 and at Surlingham Church Marsh on 12/3. An earlier unidentified Eristalis sp. at the Nunnery Lakes on 8/2 was presumably also this species.

Recorded from Rockland Broad on 30/4 and 19/8 and from Buckenham Marshes on 26/8.
Sericomyia silentis
Caught at Surlingham Church Marsh on 12/8.
Pipunculidae sp.
Tentatively identified at The Nunnery on 1/6, a small black fly with big red eyes.
Drosophila sp.
Probably these around composting vegetables and fruit in the garden on 13/8.

First noted on 21/3 at the Nunnery Lakes, like that shown in Chinery although could be similar species.

Order Trichoptera

Most Caddis-flies went unidentified; the following were tentative identifications from Chinery. The first unidentified caddis-fly of the year was recorded on 7/5.

Tentatively identified from the garden trap on 16/5.
Mystacides longicornis
Tentatively identified from the garden trap on 15/5.
Phrygaena grandis
Tentatively identified from The Nunnery on 13/6 and from the garden trap on 19/6.
