2000 for 2000

Eriocrania subpurpurella to Cydia pomonella (Codling Moth)

[Previous] [Next]

Order Lepidoptera

A total of 638 species were recorded, including 364 macros and 31 butterflies. However, a number of species were identified from evidence only, especially leaf-miners. Before this year, I had identified no leaf-mines of any type, but with a bit of effort in the autumn, the mines of 63 species were found. Many of the 179 species new to me were therefore miners, but they did also include 46 macros. My UK list by the end of the year was 747 species, including 437 macros and 44 butterflies. The garden list at Stoke Holy Cross grew to 472 species, including 312 macros (38 new) and 18 butterflies (three new). A summary of garden moth-trapping is given in Appendix 2. The effect of running a 125W MV trap instead of a 6W Actinic was pronounced.

Highlights included Paraswammerdamia albicapitella in the garden (possibly the first Norfolk record), Cydia orobana at Horsey Dunes, Purple-bordered Gold at Thetford Warren and a trio of scarce migrants in the garden; White-point, Scarce Bordered Straw and Ni Moth.

Family Eriocraniidae

Eriocrania subpurpurella
An old mine of this species was identified on oak at Brettenham Heath on 13/10.

Family Hepialidae

Hepialus humuli (Ghost Moth)
Only two were recorded, trapped at The Nunnery on 13/6 and at Fenham-le-Moor on 24/7. The latter was a male but a particularly large one, the size of the female shown as Figure 10 on Plate 1 in Skinner. These records were both my earliest and latest dates for the species. Still not recorded from the garden however.
Hepialus sylvina (Orange Swift)
Recorded exclusively from the garden where trapped on 12 dates between 13/8 and 28/8 (i.e. almost nightly during this period). Nine were present on 16/8 but mostly not counted.
Hepialus hecta (Gold Swift)
My first record of this species was of one netted at dusk flying around water meadows at Mannington Hall on 3/6.
Hepialus lupulinus (Common Swift)
Early in the spring, I found two larvae but erroneously thought them to be beetles until I found them emerged (but dead) as adults on 14/4 - the actual emergence date was unknown but will have been some time in early April. This early emergence date was presumably due to them being kept indoors where it was warm. The first adult was trapped in the garden on 9/5 (my earliest outdoor emergence by ten days) and the species was then regular until 17/6. A total of 50 (up to six per night) were trapped on 20 dates during this period. The species was also noted at Pilning on 27/5, Whitlingham on 28/5 (when about 10 seen at dusk along the riverbank, including one female apparently pumping pheromones out and the rest males), Mannington Hall on 3/6 and The Nunnery on 13/6.
Hepialus fusconebulosa (Map-winged Swift)
My first record of this species was one trapped at Burley Woodhead on 23/7 from a bracken covered slope on the edge of Ilkley Moor. A second one was trapped on 26/7 at Fenham-le-Moor.
