Common on 31/5 with records here on at least six more dates until
the last on 29/6. Also noted at Two Mile Bottom, Thetford Warren,
The Nunnery, Nunnery Lakes, West Harling Woods and Brettenham Heath.
The most unusual record was of one trapped in the garden on 12/6,
my first at home but given the abundance of this species in the Brecks
it must be possible that this was a case of "assisted passage".
Scoparia pyralella
Widespread in the Brecks. Noted on eight dates between 31/5 and 13/7,
from Barnhamcross Common (four dates), Thetford Warren, Knettishall
Heath, The Nunnery and, the only non-Brecks record, from Whitlingham
on 1/7.

here on 45 dates until the last of the year on 7/8. Also commonly
noted along field edges at Stoke Holy Cross at dusk around nettle
patches as well as at The Nunnery and Fenham-le-Moor but nowhere else
surprisingly.
Perinephela lancealis
Recorded from the garden on 3/7 (my first record here), Knettishall
Heath on 8/7 and The Nunnery on 13/7.
Phlyctaenia coronata
Trapped on 22 dates in the garden between 11/6 and 19/8, with the
only other record being from The Nunnery on 13/7.
Anania verbascalis
My first record of this species was one netted at Thetford Warren
on 18/7.
Nascia cilialis
My first record of this apparently scarce species was from Shotesham

from heather), Nunnery Lakes on 18/8, 26/9 and 2/10, Lopham Fen on
24/8, Surlingham Church Marsh on 26/8 and Horsey on 30/9. Also in
the garden where a total of 175 trapped on 53 dates between 15/6 and
22/10. There was a first influx in late June and early July but larger
numbers in late August and September. The peak garden count was 19
on 28/9 (with 17 on 29/9 and 14 on 30/9). These numbers compare with
garden totals for the previous three years of 0,2,& 0, so quite
an improvement, although how much this is due to the season and how
muc to MV is unclear. Probably a good year though.
Pleuroptya ruralis (Mother of Pearl)
Trapped in the garden on 29 dates between 28/6 and 31/8, with other
records from Two Mile Bottom, Marsham Heath and Strumpshaw Fen.

Adaina microdactyla
One was netted on Barnhamcross Common on 8/5.
Emmelina monodactyla
By the far the most commonly recorded plume, being trapped in the
garden on 51 dates. One or two were trapped on ten dates between 9/3
and 29/4 (although earlier records may have been missed due to the
lack of a trap). None then until 21/6 but on the wing then until the
last on 27/10. Interestingly, Emmet (1988) says the species flies
from September to April, but mentions "it is not known whether
adults occurring from late June to early August are long-lived hibernated
specimens or belong to a summer generation." Interestingly, my
records in previous years did not include any from this summer period,
perhaps suggesting something unusual about 2000. The only other record
was from The Nunnery on 2/8.
Family Hesperiidae
Thymelicus sylvestris (Small Skipper)
Only recorded in the Brecks this year, noted on nine dates between
20/6 and 4/8. Most records from Barnhamcross Common but also at Brettenham
Heath and Thetford Warren.

Woods). The only other record was from Horsey-Winterton on 5/8.
Ochlodes venata (Large Skipper)
Noted on 13 dates between the first at Two Mile Bottom on 6/6 and
the last, also there, on 23/8. Additional Brecks localities were Barnhamcross
Common, Harling Woods, Nunnery Lakes and Frost's Common. Elsewhere,
recorded from Stoke Holy Cross (fields on north side of village),
Bramerton and Horsford Woods.
Family Papilionidae
Papilio machaon (The Swallowtail)
At least seven were counted from the Weaver's Way at Hickling on 22/6.
Family Pieridae
Colias croceus (Clouded Yellow)
Not a bad year for inland in Norfolk. The first was seen in fields
between Swardeston and Mulbarton on 13/8 with further records from
the Nunnery Lakes on 21/8 (two) and 4/9 and from The Gallops (Harling
Woods) on 27/8.
Gonepteryx rhamni (The Brimstone)
Recorded on 26 dates during the year, the highest number in the period
1997-2000. The first of the year was noted at The Nunnery on 9/3 and
the last was at The Gallops (Harling Woods) on 27/8. Two generations
were involved with the first on the wing until at least 22/6 and the
new brood from at least 2/8 but a record in between on 6/7 not clearly
attributable? Other locations were Arundel, Thetford, Rishbeth, Marsham
Heath, Woodbastwick Fen, Barnhamcross Common, Shotesham Great Wood,
Nunnery Lakes, Upton Fen, Two Mile Bottom and a long-overdue garden
tick on 26/8.
Pieris brassicae (Large White)
The first of the year was noted at Worthing on 7/5. The species was
recorded on 38 dates through the year with two broods apparent, on
the wing 7/5 to 22/6 and again 18/7 to the last on 30/9. The species
was recorded in Norfolk from Surlingham Church Marsh, Stoke Holy Cross
(including garden), Barnhamcross Common, Hickling Broad, Nunnery Lakes,
Whitlingham, Rockland, Berney Marshes, Titchwell, Thetford, Thetford
Warren, Horsford Woods, Swardeston, Harling Woods and Horsey. Elsewhere
noted from Worthing, Porlock, Washbattle Bridge and Thetford Heath.
Pieris rapae (Small White)
Apparently a poor year, although as usual many Small/Green-veined
Whites went unidentified. Only recorded on 11 dates, from 19/3 (Arundel)
to 6/6 (Two Mile Bottom) and again from 29/7 to 20/8 (both from the
garden). Additional records were from Nunnery Lakes, The Nunnery,
Thetford Warren and Barnhamcross Common.
Pieris napi (Green-veined White)
Noted on 23 dates, although as usual many Small/Green-veined Whites
went unidentified. The first of the year was on Barnhamcross Common
on 25/4 and then on the wing until 5/6. Probably a gap between broods
then with the species again noted from 2/7 to 21/8. Other records
were from Harling Woods, Surlingham Church Marsh, Whitlingham, Porlock,
Washbattle Bridge, Avon Gorge, Mannington Hall, Buxton Heath, Bramerton,
Lindisfarne, Caistor Fort, Thetford Heath, Narborough Railway Line,
Frost's Common, Nunnery Lakes and Horsford Woods.
Anthocharis cardamines (Orange-tip)
The first of the year was noted in Gargrave on 19/4 with the last
on the wing on Barnhamcross Common on 16/6, although a larva found
here on Hairy Rock-cress on 26/6 was thought to be this species. Noted
in flight on 25 dates with other records from Ashwellthorpe Wood,
Stoke Holy Cross, Thetford Warren, Shotesham Great Wood, Surlingham
Church Marsh, Whitlingham, Nunnery Lakes, Porlock, Rockland and Two
Mile Bottom.
Family Lycaenidae
Callophrys rubi (Green Hairstreak)
This species was recorded on Barnhamcross Common on at least five
dates between 8/5 and 13/6, being relatively easy to find in the SW
corner of the common. The only other record was a surprise second
garden record on 14/5, only present briefly.
Neozephyrus quercus (Purple Hairstreak)
Recorded on Barnhamcross Common on 3/7 and 17/7 - the low number of
sightings was partly due to poor weather conditions.
Satyrium w-album (White-letter Hairstreak)
At least four were noted along Green Lane by Thetford Tesco's, including
one giving excellent views at eye level feeding on a thistle.
Lycaena phlaeas (Small Copper)
The first of the year was recorded at East Wretham Heath on 2/5. The
species was noted on 42 dates during the year. This was much higher
than the three previous years (25, 24, 25), with two broods on the
wing from 2/5 to 16/6 and then from 17/7 to 30/9. With a gap in sightings
in early September, however, it is possible that three generations
were involved. Norfolk locations for the species were the garden,
Barnhamcross Common, Thetford Warren, Brettenham Heath, Rockland Broad,
Thetford, The Nunnery, Nunnery Lakes, Horsey-Winterton, Frost's Common,
Whitlingham, Two Mile Bottom, Harling Woods and Great Yarmouth. Outside
the county, the only record was from Ambersham Common in Sussex on
6/5.
Plebejus argus (Silver-studded Blue)
A single male was netted at Horsford Woods on 12/8.
Aricia agestis (Brown Argus)
An excellent set of records this year. The first brood was on the
wing on eight dates from 16/5 (at the Nunnery Lakes) to 15/6 with
the second brood noted on four dates between 1/8 and 31/8. The species
was recorded from six locations - Nunnery Lakes (16/5, 13/6, 1/8 and
21/8), Barnhamcross Common (7/6), Thetford Warren (9/6, 16/8 and 31/8),
Two Mile Bottom (6/6), West Harling Woods (15/6) and Rockland Broad
(29/5 and 4/6). Four of these were new localities for me for the species.
Polyommatus icarus (Common Blue)
The first of the year was quite late, on Rockland Broad on 29/5. The
species was noted on 29 dates in two broods but the precise extent
of these was unclear, with the division some time in July - the first
half of June produced the greatest concentration of records. The last
was at the Nunnery Lakes on 29/8. In Norfolk, also noted from Barnhamcross
Common, Brettenham Heath, Buxton Heath, Two Mile Bottom, Stoke Holy
Cross, West Harling Woods, Berney Marshes, Great Yarmouth, Upton Fen,
Thetford Warren and Swardeston. Outside the county, only recorded
at Lindisfarne.
Celastrina argiolus (Holly Blue)
A very poor year for this species. The only spring record was on 16/5
at the Nunnery Lakes. A few more in the summer, at Thetford Tesco's
(Green Lane) on 19/7, Nunnery Lakes on 1/8, Stoke Holy Cross (garden)
on 5/8 and Barnhamcross Common on 14/8.
Family Nymphalidae
Vanessa atalanta (Red Admiral)
An average year for this species, which was noted on 41 dates throughout
the year. The first was one at Rockland on 30/4 followed by one at
Pagham on 6/5 but no more then until 8/6 after which widespread for
the next month. More sporadic records in July and early August but
more common in second half of August. Relatively few in September
and, notably, no October records. However, late individuals were noted
in Thetford on 2/11, Stoke Holy Cross on 5/11 and the last of the
year on Barnhamcross Common on 13/11.
Vanessa cardui (Painted Lady)
The best year for this species since the big 1996 influx with records
on 15 dates, in two main periods. The first flight was noted between
7/6 (at Trowse Meadows) and 23/6 and then again between 2/8 and 25/8.
Finally, a late one was seen at Slimbridge on 17/10. The majority
of sightings were of singles but five were noted at Berney Marshes
on 18/6. Other localities were Rockland Broad, Barnhamcross Common,
West Harling Woods, Upton Fen, Thetford Warren, Nunnery Lakes, Stoke
Holy Cross (a long-awaited garden tick on 13/8), Whitlingham and Lopham
Fen.
Aglais urtica (Small Tortoiseshell)
The species was recorded on only 33 dates during the year, which was
less than half the number of dates in the last three years (77, 68,
70). The first was seen at The Nunnery on 9/3 and the last at Horsey
on 30/9, although only three records after mid-August. No clear divisions
into broods although relatively few records in June.
Inachis io (The Peacock)
The first of the year was one at the Nunnery Lakes on 8/2, followed
by one at Thurton on 26/2 then none until one at Hickling on 26/3.
Noted on 45 dates in total, about average over recent years, the first
brood on the wing until 16/6, then an "in between" one on
17/7 and the second brood proper essentially from 1/8 to 27/8 but
a late one on 26/9 at Nunnery Lakes. Noted from the garden, including
at least seven on 13/8.
Polygonia c-album (The Comma)
Noted on 20 dates, the highest number in recent years. A poor spring,
however, with just singles at Thetford Warren on 7/4 and The Nunnery
on 8/5. The new brood began with two at the Nunnery Lakes on 7/7 then
also recorded from Barnhamcross Common, Green Lane Thetford, Whitlingham,
Stoke Holy Cross (garden), Thetford Heath, Horsford Woods, Swardeston
and Hockering Wood, where four on 23/9 were nearly the last of the
year. However, a late one was noted at Waxham Sands on 4/11.
Argynnis aglaja (Dark Green Fritillary)
This species was found to be very common on Lindisfarne Island on
26/7, with probably over 60 seen. At least three were still on the
wing at Horsey Dunes on 5/8 in relatively dull weather.
Pararge aegeria (Speckled Wood)
This species was recorded on 58 dates, by far the highest total of
the last four years (cf 21, 28, 37). The first of the year was on
the wing on 6/4 at The Nunnery but relatively few until mid-May. A
gap in broods probably occurred in July although not completely clear
where. Most frequently recorded in August and early September with
the last at Hockering Wood on 23/9. Although widespread, however,
not recorded in the garden this year.
Lasiommata megera (The Wall)
Noted on seven dates during the year. In the spring, recorded from
Surlingham Church Marsh on 13/5 and Rockland Broad on 29/5 and 4/6.
The summer brood was noted on 6/8 in the garden and Rockland, at Buckenham
on 18/8 and again at Rockland on 19/8. The last date, at Rockland
on 4/10, was presumably a third brood.
Hipparchia semele (The Grayling)
The only records were of three at Horsey-Winterton on 5/8 and one
at Thetford Warren on 16/8.
Pyronia tithonus (The Gatekeeper)
The first of the year was at Barnhamcross Common on 3/7. Noted on
31 dates in a single brood on the wing until 19/8 (Rockland and Whitlingham).
The species was common and widespread with no records of note - it
was noted in the garden.
Maniola jurtina (Meadow Brown)
The first of the year was at Barnhamcross Common on 7/6. Noted on
60 dates, the most frequently recorded species and the highest number
during the last four years. Recorded in the garden during the year.
Common and widespread with the last at Two Mile Bottom on 6/9.
Coenonympha pamphilus (Small Heath)
Noted on 22 dates, including 16 records from Barnhamcross Common,
where the first of the year were noted on 15/5. There appeared to
be a single brood through to 21/7 with the only later record being
at Barnhamcross on 4/9. Elsewhere, the species was recorded from Thetford
Warren, Berney Marshes, Brettenham Heath, Icklingham, The Nunnery
and Nunnery Lakes.
Aphantopus hyperantus (The Ringlet)
The first were at Upton Fen on 22/6 with records on 25 dates (the
highest for the last four years) until the last at Frost's Common
on 10/8. The species was also noted from Thetford Warren, Castle Marshes,
Barnhamcross Common, Icklingham, Whitlingham, Caistor Chalk Pit, Narborough
Railway Line, Nunnery Lakes, Brettenham Heath, Horsford Woods, Framingham
Earl, Two Mile Bottom, Lindisfarne and Thetford Heath but still not
from the garden.
Family Lasiocampidae
Poecilocampa populi (December Moth)
Recorded only from the garden where 19 trapped on 13 dates between
1/11 (my earliest date) and 9/12 (joint latest). Mostly singles but
a maximum of five noted on 23/11.
Trichiura crataegi (Pale Eggar)
My first record of this species was of one trapped in the garden on
29/8.
Lasiocampa quercus (Oak Eggar)
A poor year, with the only records being from Marsham Heath on 29/7
and from the garden on 30/7.
Euthrix potatoria (The Drinker)
This species was identified as a caterpillar at Woodbastwick Fen on
24/4, Surlingham Church Marsh on 29/4 (2) and Mannington Hall on 3/6
(large by now), on waterside vegetation each time. Adults were noted
at Fenham-le-Moor on 25/7 (5) and 26/7, at Dingle Marshes on 12/8,
Strumpshaw Fen on 14/8 and Surlingham Church Marsh on 26/8 (this being
my latest ever record). However, none were noted in the garden during
2000.
Family Drepanidae
Watsonalla binaria (Oak Hook-tip)
Only recorded from the garden, where trapped on 2/6 (presumably a
first-brood moth) and then on five dates between 6/8 and 25/8 (representing
the second-brood).
Drepana falcataria (Pebble Hook-tip)
A large number of records (following only two prior to this year);
this species apparently prefers MV light to Actinic. Single first-brood
adults were noted in the garden on 8/5 (my earliest by far) and 2/6
but second-brood trapped here also on 8 dates between 29/7 and 15/8
(mostly not counted but three on 3/8). Also noted at Marsham Heath
on 29/7 and Surlingham Church Marsh on 26/8 (my latest ever).
Cilix glaucata (Chinese Character)
Common as in previous years. The first of the first-brood was very
early, when one flew into the kitchen on 25/4. A total of 16 were
noted on nine dates until 2/6. A record on 28/6 could have been of
either brood. The second brood was then noted on 28 dates between
18/7 and 10/9 although the last was the only record after 23/8 and
could possibly have been a third brood? Despite the regularity of
this species in the garden, the only other record was from Fenham-le-Moor
on 25/7.
Thyatira batis (Peach Blossom)
Only trapped in the garden on 29/6, 3/7 and 9/7 and at Knettishall
Heath on 8/7.
Habrosyne pyritoides (Buff Arches)
This was another species which seemed to be noticeably more common
this year with an MV trap than in previous years at Actinic. The species
was trapped in the garden on 24 dates between 29/6 and 9/8 (my latest
ever date), although no counts were recorded. Additional records were
from Knettishall Heath on 8/7, Rawdon on 27/7 and Marsham Heath on
29/7.
Tethea ocularis (Figure of Eighty)
This species was trapped in the garden on five dates between 2/6 and
27/6 (four singles and last date not counted). It was also noted at
Mannington Hall on 3/6 and at The Nunnery on 13/6.
Polyploca ridens (Frosted Green)
After my first record of this species on 21/4/99, I recorded one again
in the garden exactly a year later with further singles trapped on
29/4 and 12/5.
