[Previous] [Next]

Family Geometridae

Archiearis parthenias (Orange Underwing)
The only record was of one netted in the forest at Brandon Country Park on 20/3 whilst looking for Adders. This was the first I've netted and been able to look at closely.
Alsophila nescularia (March Moth)
A total of 19 were trapped on 11 dates in the garden between 5/3 (although this may not have been the start of the flight period, given my broken trap) and 8/4. Another was trapped at Leathley on 16/4.
Pseudoterpna pruinata (Grass Emerald)
My first record of this species was of one rather worn individual trapped at Marsham Heath on 29/7.
Geometra papilionaria (Large Emerald)
This species was recorded at both Knettishall Heath on 8/7 and Marsham Heath on 29/7, both areas with plenty of birch. More notably, my first for the garden was trapped on 1/8 (this also becomes my latest date).
Hemithea aestivaria (Common Emerald)
Trapped in the garden on 12 dates between 17/6 and 13/7, much more frequently than in previous years (only four dates in 1999). Also noted at Knettishall Heath on 8/7.
Hemiostola chrysoprasaria (Small Emerald)
Trapped in the garden on eight dates between 24/6 and 2/8, following none in 1999 and three dates in 1998. Not noted elsewhere.

One was trapped in the garden on 30/6, my first for the site and first since records from Leigh Woods in 1994.
Cyclophora punctaria (Maiden's Blush)
One battered specimen at Marsham Heath on 29/7 was my first record of this species.

Lomographa bimaculata (White-pinion Spotted)
Only recorded from the garden where a total of 13 were trapped on seven dates between 8/5 and 8/6, with a peak of five on 2/6.
Lomographa temerata (Clouded Silver)
Apart from at Mannington Hall on 3/6, all records were from the garden where trapped on 33 dates between 15/5 and 10/8, the species appearing to have an abnormally long flight period this year. Counts were only recorded up to 19/6 with peaks of seven on 12/6 and 19/6.
Theria primaria (Early Moth)
In the garden, one was seen on the window on 26/1 and singles were trapped on 11/3 and 16/3.
Campaea margaritata (Light Emerald)
The first of the year was trapped on 31/5 in the garden where noted on 21 dates until the last of the year on 16/9. There were no garden records between 6/7 and 19/8 presumably representing a gap in broods. Other records were from The Nunnery (first brood on 13/6), Knettishall Heath (first brood on 8/7) and Surlingham Church Marsh (second brood on 26/8). Records from Burley Woodhead on 23/7 and Fenham-le-Moor on 25/7 were between the two Norfolk broods, as might be expected for sites further north.

Family Sphingidae

Sphinx ligustri (Privet Hawk-moth)
A pupating moth kept since summer 1999 emerged on 9/6 and with amazing precision, the first was caught in the garden trap the same night. The species was trapped in the garden on 14 nights until 7/7, but a later record was from Marsham Heath on 29/7. Not all counts were recorded but three were present on 2/7.
Hyloicus pinastri (Pine Hawk-moth)
None in the garden this year but three were trapped at Marsham Heath on 29/7 with one at Strumpshaw Fen on 14/8.
Mimas tiliae (Lime Hawk-moth)
Only recorded from the garden where trapped on 16/5 (2), 2/6 (1), 8/6 (1) and 19/6 (3).
Smerinthus ocellata (Eyed Hawk-moth)
This species was trapped in the garden on seven dates between 10/6 and 9/7 (1-2 per night), with further records from The Nunnery on 1/6 and a much later one from Strumpshaw Fen on 14/8, probably of a second brood.
Laothoe populi (Poplar Hawk-moth)
The most frequently recorded hawk-moth as usual, being trapped in the garden on 35 dates between 8/5 and 13/8. Counts were not fully recorded although three were noted several times. Additional records were from The Nunnery, Rawdon and the last of the year at Strumpshaw Fen on 14/8.
Hemaris tityus (Narrow-bordered Bee Hawk-moth)
After last year's dramatic events, hopes were high for 2000. However, dismal weather in the spring mean that no adults were noted at the site at all, despite much searching. A single larva was found on Devil's-bit Scabious in the same glade as 1999, however, on 14/7, being ca 2cm long at this stage. Additionally, lots of larval damage was noted to Devil's-bit Scabious on 21/7 (although no larvae noted). It was provided with plenty of food and pupated in the office some time between the evening of 28/7 and the morning of 31/7.
Macroglossum stellatarum (Humming-bird Hawk-moth)
A long-awaited garden tick finally appeared briefly at the flowerbed on 30/9 before zooming off over the fence - my only one of the year despite a good influx.
Deilephila elpenor (Elephant Hawk-moth)
The first of the year was trapped at Handley Farm in Devon on 22/5. The species was trapped in the garden on 17 dates between 31/5 and 21/7, with not all counts recorded but three on 2/7. Additional records were from Mannington Hall, Knettishall Heath and a late one, presumably of the second brood, at Surlingham Church Marsh on 26/8.
Deilephila porcellus (Small Elephant Hawk-moth)
Recorded from The Nunnery on 13/6 and Knettishall Heath on 8/7 but also the first record for the garden was one trapped here on 3/7.
