2000 for 2000

Introduction

Introduction

For the year 2000, an attempt was made to record as many species as possible, with the aim of attaining 2000 species during the year. Not everything could be identified to species but taxa were recorded as well as possible given the literature and knowledge available to me at the time. Efforts were made to determine which species were wild or naturalised, although this was not always possible. Help was also provided with identification by a number of other people, notably John Martin (numerous plants), Rich Fuller (seaweeds), Su Gough (fungi), Steve Holloway, Mike Armitage, Mike Raven, Rob Fuller (fish), Ken Saul, Dave Hipperson, Martin Ellis and Reg and Lil Evans (fungi).

The "rules" by which I roughly decided whether or not a "species" should be counted were roughly as follows:

a) Is it wild / naturalised or is it not self-sustaining?

b) If not identifiable to species, then only one individual of that grouping should be included, even if more than one was clearly recorded.

c) The evidence of a species occurring was acceptable, even if that species was not actually seen.

The final tally was 2,017 "species" by my reckoning. It is accepted that a number of mistakes may have been made, especially when using a general guide such as Chinery to put names to insects. However, a great many additional species were recorded but not identified at all (e.g. most flies, bees, beetles, etc.) The target of 2,000 species in the year 2000 was therefore judged to have been duly achieved. The amount of work involved was huge but the advance in my personal knowledge, especially about plants and leaf-mining moths, made it well-worth the effort.

The following systematic list details all the records and are presented classified mostly to order level where known but to family level for Pteridophyta, Spermatophyta, Lepidoptera and Aves.
